2011 looks like a fairly light year in terms of scheduled panels and signings (but in between that are meetings, meals, pitching in at Mysterious Galaxy's various booths, etc.).
Here's where I know I'll be:
Thursday, July 21
Noon-12:50: Signing, Mysterious Galaxy, Booth #1119
Friday, July 22
12:30-1:30: Panel, Crime: Modern Morality Tales— The idea of crime fiction serving as a sort of modern morality tale goes back to Dostoevsky and Nabokov. Panelists discuss how murder and mayhem can impart significance and structure to readers. Max Allan Collins (Kiss Her Goodbye, The Nate Heller series), Barbara Collins (Antiques Knock-Off), Jeff Mariotte (CSI: The Burning Season), Diane Clark and Astrid Bear (San Diego Noir), Gar Anthony Haywood (Cemetery Road), Gary Phillips (Angeltown), Paul Malmont (The Astounding, the Amazing, and the Unknown), Lisa Brackmann (Rock, Paper, Tiger), and Gregg Hurwitz (You're Next) explore the dark streets of imagination with San Diego Noir editor Maryelizabeth Hart. Room 8
2:00-3:00 Signing, Autograph Area Table 8
In all probability, I will be attending these panels:
Thursday, 1:15-2:15 Books vs. Graphic Novels and Comics— Writers often dabble with various forms of art as an outlet for their creativity. In this panel, authors discuss the process and collaboration involved in publishing a graphic novel versus a novel, as well as the role comic books play in the creation of their characters and story arcs. Panelists Christopher Moore and Ian Corson (The Griff), Jim Butcher (The Harry Dresden series), Tom Sniegoski (The Fallen series), Amber Benson (The Calliope Reaper Jones novels), and Matthew Holms (Babymouse, Squish) talk about the differences and similarities with moderator David Mariotte of Mysterious Galaxy. Room 6A
Thursday, 7:00-8:00 The Scoop at Simon & Schuster!— Get the inside word on Simon & Schuster's upcoming books and the chance to win exclusive prizes! Lucille Rettino (marketing director), Elke Villa (senior marketing manager), Carolyn Swerdloff (associate marketing manager), and Anna McKean (publicity manager) give you the scoop on upcoming books from exciting authors, including Cassandra Clare, Scott Westerfeld, Orson Scott Card, and Becca Fitzpatrick. Hear what is going on with S&S's hot properties -- Star Trek and The Smurfs -- and get a chance to win exclusive giveaways. All attendees will receive a limited edition T-shirt for Cassandra Clare's Clockwork Prince. Room 9
Friday, 5:00-6:00 International Association of Media Tie-in Writers: Scribe Awards— Lee Goldberg (Monk) and Max Allan Collins (Mike Hammer), co-founders of the IAMTW, will announce the winners of this year's Scribe Awards for excellence in tie-in writing. They will be joined by this year's Grandmaster Award "Faust" winner, Peter David (The Hulk), for a freewheeling look at their careers and experiences in one of the most popular and yet underappreciated branches of the writing trade. Followed by a Q&A session. Room 4
If anyone needs to find me at any other time, checking in at booth #1119 is the best way to go.
PS: I won't be at the con on Preview Night (Wed) because I'll be part of a talk/signing at San Diego's Central Library about San Diego Noir. I'm joining Martha Lawrence, Ken Kuhlken, Lisa Brackmann, Diane Clark, and editor Maryelizabeth Hart at 6:30 to talk about crime and nasty doings in America's Favorite City.
